The logical solution is to promote me in place, and our division has goals around personell promotion. However, we just reorganized and the new division manager has halted all promotions. I am not capable of doing less than my best at my job, but my skills are being taken advantage of. My supervisor and manager are supportive of my promotion. As an aspiring physician now entering medical school, one of my biggest concerns is how I will standout as a leader in a (still) male-dominated field. I've also recently read Sheryl Sandberg's book Lean In, and it reiterates some of the same points discussed in this post. "Developing your own style" specifically stood out to me as Sandberg also discusses setting your own pace and pioneering your own style of leadership in the workplace. Will definitely try to employ some of these tips. While her approaches towards networking and building trust seem like the ideal way to navigate an organization, I'm also wondering what challenges Lindy and other women have faced in more male-dominated industries. Being transformational and more relationship-oriented can prove to be a challenge in these industries, so how does a woman leader balance her approach while remaining assertive and results-oriented as well? Is there a perfect balance, or is it necessary to wear different hats with different individuals?

I am currently working on my doctoral dissertation concerning women's leadership effectiveness, leadership style, social intelligence all within more traditionally male industries. My study is quantitative in nature, but getting anecdotal information from female leaders has been incredibly insightful. I would love to hear your thoughts.Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17080072525618511144noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5814566138903477708.post-59781047226813632662014-01-21T16:36:47.997-05:002014-01-21T16:36:47.997-05:00Thank you for the feature! The first word that comes to mind as a synonym for “aggressive” is “attacking”, but there are other much better synonyms such as enterprising and ambitious. My boss loves that I speak up, that I challenge his thinking, that I challenge my peers thinking and that I am even willing to challenge our CEO at a meeting for our division. The key is to be challenging, enterprising and ambitious while still being kind, respectful, and understanding. I do a lot of my "aggressive challenging" with phrases that start with something like "can you help me understand how the analysis we are looking at..." I find two parts of that type of phrasing to be really helpful when I am challenging what other people are thinking. 1) The first part is “can you help me” which makes people feel that I respect their thoughts and I am looking for their insight. 2) The second part is leaving the word “you” out of my reference to the thing I am challenging. As soon as the word “you” enters the mix, people automatically feel they are being attacked. There is a huge difference in response between “can you help me understand how this analysis supports the position that…” and “I don’t think your analysis supports the position that…” How I communicate is the key between being perceived as thoughtful and challenging versus bitchy and attacking!Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5814566138903477708.post-40639103824272293042012-12-19T00:06:35.087-05:002012-12-19T00:06:35.087-05:00Awesome blog over here!
